DEAR EDITOR,
This opportunity is taken to respond to my friend, Chris Ram’s misinterpretation of my contention that Guyana is a “nation of laws.” Reference is made to his letter “Lincoln Lewis’ assertion is a contradiction of all that he has courageously championed for decades” (KN 8th December, 2014). It is accurate to say ours is a nation of laws. This society as we know it today is established on laws, the supreme being the Constitution. What we can discuss and which has much merit is the disrespect for the rule of law. Being a nation of laws and practicing/upholding the rule of law are two different and distinct positions.
And to the violation of the rule of law in the examples cited by Chris, there is convergence of views that the government has no regard for the rule of law. It is this disrespect for the rule of law that is a factor for the lawlessness in society. It is out of concern for the disrespect for the rule of law in a nation of laws the premise of my arguments is built for adherence to the constitution and its attendant laws. Trust this would clarify any misconception of my consistent position, which is, in a nation of laws the people must demand respect for the rule of law and hold elected and government officials accountable.
