…as PPP/C elections “A team” takes shape
While a premature General Election appears ever more possible with the prorogation of Parliament, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) seems to have already put its elections machinery into motion.
President Donald Ramotar has already confirmed his intention to run as the party’s presidential candidate, while it is being peddled that current Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett will emerge the Prime Ministerial candidate and former President Bharrat Jagdeo as State Advisor.
Information out of the PPP camp is that the shakeup will come following the expected resignation of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds who has served in that capacity from the inception of the PPP reign in 1992.
Rodrigues-Birkett’s position also comes across as the PPP’s ticket to win over Amerindian support in their bid to balance ethnic composition. Jagdeo was part of the so called “A team” for the 1997 General Elections.
The 1997, general elections saw Janet Jagan as the PPP Presidential candidate, Sam Hinds as the candidate for Prime Minister and Bharrat Jagdeo as the candidate for Vice President. The trio was popularly called the ‘A’ Team during the election campaign. The PPP/Civic was victorious at that election, capturing some 55 percent of the vote.
With much public opinion against Ramotar, his fight to regain the Presidency seems to be an uphill task since under his watch, the PPP/C has given the poorest performance of its existence, with a definite no confidence motion looming against the Ramotar Regime.
The President, despite the combined opposition’s utterances, has again revealed his intent to hold discussions with the other side. He has stated however that if talk does not work, he will be calling elections.
