Former Group 3 champion driver Ryan Rahaman’s confirmation of participation in Sunday’s
Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) presented additional boost to Guyana’s chances of retaining the regional title.
Rahaman, who comes from a racing family that includes his father Jad and Uncle Ray, both retired now, added his name to the list of high profile local drivers who will be aiming to defend home turf against counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname and the USA.
The young speedster, speaking with Kaieteur Sport at his garage yesterday, when quizzed about his preparations, said that the team is almost complete with the work and it’s now about testing the reliability and speed of his Ford Sierra Cosworth which according to him had not raced since last November.
“You may recall that we did not take to the track this year after suffering some braking issues last November, but my team of mechanics was able to rectify the problem and preliminary testing indicated that all is well,” Rahaman revealed.
He added that the team did some testing on the braking system, going through a simulation at racing speed and the brakes held well so they felt that it should be fine come Sunday. Widely considered as one of the purest drivers in the sport locally, Rahaman said he is satisfied with the modifications that were done, informing that work was also done on the suspension and handling and it is just a matter of him getting on the track and putting his best foot forward.
He pointed out that while in his opinion the issues pertaining to the advantages and disadvantages of pitting the two-wheel against the four-wheel are still not settled, his focus will be to do the best he could for Team Guyana.
Rahaman paid recognition to his team that includes Freddie Mapp, Tedroy, Hakim and Veeko, while he also extended much gratitude to his sponsors Valvoline, Carlsberg, J.R. Burgers, GEM Magazine, Guyson’s Engineering, Silhouette Restaurant and Altitude Cocktail & Bar.
