Jameel Mounter, the teen who was struck down by an Education Ministry official’s car three Sundays ago succumbed to his injuries in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Saturday night.
Mounter, who was declared “brain dead” more than a week ago, died around 19:30 hrs while he was on a life support machine.
He had been in that position since September 29, last.
According to information received, the 13-year-old boy of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was struck from behind by the official’s vehicle while walking with two cousins on the WCD Public Road.
A cousin of the dead lad, who asked not to be named, explained that they were walking in single file in the direction of Uitvlugt, when a car “came from nowhere” and struck Mounter.
She alleged that at the time of the accident, the driver did not come out of the car, and it was left to her and another relative to place the unconscious lad in the official’s vehicle.
He was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital before being transferred to the GPHC where he later succumbed.
The cousin told this newspaper that while at the Leonora Cottage Hospital, the Ministry official, who had struck down Jameel tried to leave while the doctors were tending to the unconscious teen but he eventually stayed after she stood in front of his vehicle.
This publication was told that Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam and other officials had met with the teen’s mother while he was in the hospital and offered to assist with travelling expenses but the family had rejected the offer.
They claimed that they are seeking ‘justice’.
Kaieteur News was told that while Mounter was a patient at the GPHC, the driver had met with his relatives and expressed his regret.
The Ministry official was placed on $100,000 station bail.
The lad’s father, Melwyn Mounter said that after a Post mortem examination is done on his son’s remains, his relatives will decide how to move forward with this case.
In light of the teenager’s death, charges could now be laid against the education ministry official.
