Accused: Anferny Cantzlaar
$1.2M worth in items, including jewellery and electronic gadgets, was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Anferny Cantzlaar, also known as ‘Space Head,’ of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, to respond to two counts of break and enter and larceny charges.
The court heard that on October 1, last, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Rhonda Simmons and stole her 42-inch flat screen television. It is also alleged that Cantzlaar managed to make off with two laptops, one HTC cellular phone, one BlackBerry cellular phone, one haversack and US$500 and $480,000 worth in jewellery.
According to the charges, the items totaled $1,215,000.
Cantzlaar pleaded not guilty to the charges and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer, Mark Conway.
The lawyer told the Court that his client, who is the father of a five-month-old baby, had never been convicted on any charge before. He admitted, however, that Cantzlaar had faced the court several times on similar charges but added that he had been exonerated.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Gant did not reveal the details of the break-in, but opposed bail citing the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence, and the fact that Cantzlaar was charged before for break and enter and larceny. The Prosecution asked the court to also heed the total cost of the items stolen.
Grant told the court that while Cantzlaar had never been convicted before, he is wanted by ranks at the Diamond and Leonora Police Stations for other matters of this nature.
The Prosecution’s request was granted. The case will be called again on October 14.
