Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Irfaan Ali, met with the United Minibus Union on Tuesday at the Ministry’s Head Office in Lacytown, to discuss issues relating to the existing fares charged by the zone 44 minibuses.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Irfaan Ali in a meeting with the United Minibus Union, discussing issues relating to the Zone 44 minibus fare structure.
Discussions by the authorities were focused on the difficulties faced by Zone 44 commuters, in relation to exorbitant fares demanded by operators after 15:00hrs and during peak periods in the morning.
It was agreed that the situation is untenable and as a result, the Ministry and the United Minibus Union fixed a fare structure to eliminate the hardship.
In a press release disseminated by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce on Tuesday, commuters and operators were advised that the new fare structure must be adhered to. Anyone found acting contrary to the structure should be reported to the authorities monitoring compliance.
In an effort to prevent any exploitation by the route 44 operators, the Ministry proposed that the fare structures be posted in the minibuses, so that if any unauthorized fares are demanded, commuters can exercise their right to deny payment, and report the “minibus number” to the relevant authority.
Also, if commuters are refused entry into a minibus that demands a higher fare, they should again record that minibus number and report the matter to the law enforcement authorities.
After route 44 minibus operators recently withdrew their services in a strike action, so as to force passengers to pay higher bus fares than the stipulated amounts, the government deployed several
“big buses” at the Stabroek Market to provide free transportation for the public.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, said that free transportation exercise was used to force the route 44 minibus operators to the bargaining table and stop them from exploiting passengers.
The tactic paid off last Thursday in a meeting held at the Ministry, where it was agreed by the authorities that the minibus situation should return to normalcy, with all minibus operators being compliant with the rules and regulations.
Subsequently, the fare structure for the Zone 32 operators was agreed upon and the “free big bus transportation” was withdrawn from the Stabroek Market.
