A group of patriotic Guyanese calling themselves ‘The Enterprise Support Group (ESG) USA Inc.’ has left the door open for ambitious students from their home village to access university education.
The group, which continues to provide financial incentives for their fellow villagers who excel at the various local examinations, re-opened the offer last week at a special graduation exercise to honour outstanding students from the Enterprise Primary School who sat this year’s National Grade Six Assessment.
And as if to reinforce their commitment to rewarding outstanding students from the village, the ESG USA Inc. has upped the contribution for its annual award scheme to a whopping $400,000.
Through its Local Steering Committee, the organization has been providing assistance to young villagers who show an inclination towards scholastic excellence and who are in need of assistance to achieve their ambitions.
This year, the Enterprise Primary School continued its tradition of producing some of the country’s top Grade Six students.
Stephanie Khan who secured a place at The Bishops’ High School, topped the list of nine students who were awarded places at the country’s premier secondary institutions, while 30 other students will attend Grade A secondary schools.
This achievement, according to the school’s Headmistress Rachael Tyrell, can be attributed to the dedication of teachers, the assistance of parents, and the willingness of the students themselves to learn.
Tyrell in her maiden Graduation address reported that for the past three terms, teachers have seen improvement in some pupils’ performance.
“Some classes have maintained a high percent pass rate at internal assessment while others have been improving,” Tyrell stated.
This news is certainly encouraging to the Enterprise Support Group USA Inc., which has over the years set targets for the students to achieve in order to benefit fully from the financial incentive on offer.
She urged the graduating students to set goals for themselves and work towards achieving them.
“Do not be distracted along the way,” the Headmistress told the audience.
Videsh Lall, a member of the ESG’s Local Steering Committee, who is also a teacher at the Enterprise Primary School, reminded that the US-based support group has maintained its promise to increase support for students once the performance improves.
“We have decided this year to give a sum of $400,000 to the top 25 students. The group is always anticipating good results from students of Enterprise Primary. They are overjoyed, but they also want them to go on and achieve much more academically, both at the secondary and tertiary level,” Lall stated.
He urged parents to play a greater role in their children’s education, especially at the Grade Two and Four levels, since this will ensure better performances at the Grade Six Assessment.
Lall said that it is possible that the ESG USA Inc. will consider rewarding the top Grade Two and Four performers.
Another Steering Committee Member, Parmanand Dindyal, explained that despite the offer made by the overseas group to assist with university education, not many persons are taking it seriously.
The group is offering to support university education to students of Enterprise who achieve certain grades throughout their secondary school years.
But according to Dindyal, the students who are eligible have not been achieving the target.
“We asking dem for their report cards and dey failing to turn up,” the local steering committee member told Kaieteur News.
“Most of the students tend to discontinue further education after leaving secondary school. Dey go and start to work. They want to earn dem own money and do dey own thing. No one has approached us to assist dem to go through university,” Dindyal explained.
Apart from education, the ESG USA Inc. has been assisting needy families in the communities.
