A 34-year-old taxi driver has been sentenced to three years imprisonment after he was yesterday found guilty of drug trafficking by city Magistrate Judy Latchman.
At the conclusion of Leron Yarris’s trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, the man was told that coupled with the jail term he must also pay a fine of $10,000 for the crime.
The charge to which he was found culpable detailed that on May 13 at Albouystown, Georgetown, Yarris had six and a half grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
During his first appearance at the Court, Yarris pleaded not guilty to the offence, but following the case presented by Inspector Joel Ricknauth, he was found guilty.
It was revealed during his first court hearing that around 12:45 hours that day, police on patrol duties stopped the defendant, who was riding a bicycle and requested to conduct a search on him.
However before they could do so, Yarris threw a plastic bag in a nearby yard.
The bag was retrieved and a search conducted therein unearthed seven small Ziploc bags with the illicit substance. While being cautioned, the Prosecutor noted that the defendant accepted ownership of the prohibited substance and was subsequently arrested and charged.
