Led by a fighting half century from wicketkeeper batsman Kemol Savory, Demerara grabbed first innings points from arch rivals Berbice when their second round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter County U-19 three- day U-19 tournament continued yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda.
In pursuit of 140 for first innings points, Demerara resumed on their overnight score of 70-2 and were bowled out for 194 in 89.2 overs after lunch on the second day. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Rudolph Singh resumed on 18 and one respectively and took the score to 94 before Singh was LBW to left arm spinner Parmanand Ramdhan for 14. Sherfene Rutherford joined Chanderpaul and added 22 for the fourth wicket. Chanderpaul who hit a six over long on to bring up his team
’s triple figure was acrobatically caught at mid off by Niall Smith for 32 (3×4,1×6) with his team 25 short of surpassing their opponent’s total.
Ramdhan then accounted for the dangerous looking Rutherford LBW for 16, while Sharaz Ramcharran sent back Malcolm Hubbard (04) in quick succession before Steven Sankar (00) was run out to leave Demerara in danger at 136-7. Keon Morris (01) was then caught behind by Hackeem Hinds off David Latchaya one run later, but the level headed Savory and Daniel Basdeo took their team to first innings honours as Demerara went to lunch at 153-8 with the former on 21 and the latter on eight.
Berbice struck just after the interval when the consistent Parmanand trapped Basdeo LBW for nine at 160, however, Savory continued to keep his cool and reached his well deserved fifty off 91 balls with seven fours. Pacer Grisean Grant had Kevin Paul (04) LBW leaving Savory unbeaten on 56. Ramdhan was the pick of the bowlers with 3-33; Ramcharran claimed 3-37 and Grant 2-36.
Trailing by 54, Berbice lost the early wicket of Shimron Hetmyer (04) who flicked left arm seamer Daniel Basdeo to square leg with the score on 14. Balchan Baldeo and Viendra Gooniah batted sensibly to add 30 for the second wicket, but leg spinner Sankar ended their resistance by trapping Baldeo LBW for 26 (2×4). Skipper Sharaz Ramcharran (07) joined the solid looking Gooniah and was brilliantly caught and bowled by Paul as Berbice slipped to 55-3, but Gooniah who displayed sound concentration and along with Latchaya saw their team to the close without further hiccups at 103-3 in 52 overs.
Gooniah was given a let off by wicketkeeper Savory who failed to hold on to a difficult chance diving to his left off Rutherford and will resume today on 35 along with Latchaya who is not out on 27 (2×4). Berbice are leading by 59 and a lot will depend on this pair if they are to pose a defendable total going into the third and final day today. Basdeo, Sankar and Paul have so far taken one wicket each.
