Due to the limited market currently available for the exportation of rice, the deteriorating Supenaam Ferry Stelling has seen a reduction in vehicular intake, especially in the larger vehicles (trucks) that usually transport rice to Georgetown for export.
Reports are that the stelling has seen a lull in the intake of trucks during the Spring Crop.
It has been indicated that only two rice millers have been utilizing the ferry services at Supenaam, while one ferry accommodates almost forty vehicles, including trucks, canters and cars on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, a local contractor it is believed has since effected recent repair works to the defected sections of the ramp, which is aligned with pieces of metal plates. While no report pertaining to the cost of the recent repairs was made available, it has been revealed that despite repairs, the metal plates were replaced.
Queries were made by PPP councillor, Farouk Khan, at Tuesday’s Regional Democratic Council meeting (RDC) in the Region Two Administration Boardroom.
Khan was told that repair works are ongoing to the defected areas of the deteriorating stelling.
Reports have indicated that the Supenaam Ferry Stelling makes a “reasonable” daily profit.
The structure came into effect sometime in 2009 at a cost of over $500M. To date, while all operations at the old Adventure Stelling have been abandoned ,continued repair works have been the trend, ever since the switch was made by the Ministry of Public Works.
