Man pleads not guilty, as child sexual abuse trial opens in Berbice
(Kaieteur News) – A 12-member jury was empanelled on Wednesday at the Berbice High Court in New Amsterdam for the trial of a man accused of sexually abusing a child.
The accused, Krishna Tulapersaud, appeared before Justice Simone Morris, where the indictments were read to him. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Tulapersaud is charged with two counts of sexual activity with a child family member. According to the indictments, the alleged offences occurred in February 2013 and February 2014.

The trial commenced immediately after the jury was sworn in.
The prosecution, led by State Counsel Marisa Edwards, is expected to call six witnesses to support its case.
Tulapersaud, who has been on remand for the past eight years, is being represented by attorney Arudranauth Gossai.
The matter has been adjourned until Monday for the continuation of the trial.
The case is the final sexual offence matter listed in the February Criminal Assizes for Berbice. Those assizes conclude ahead of the June Criminal Assizes, which are scheduled to begin on June 16, 2026.
At least 10 cases involving allegations of sexual activity with a child family member are expected to be heard during the upcoming judicial session at the Berbice High Court.
