Ex-MP, Devin Sears freed of drug trafficking charge
(Kaieteur News) – Former Alliance For Change (AFC), Member of Parliament, Devin Sears was on Thursday freed of a drug trafficking charge after the court upheld a no-case submission made by his attorneys Nigel Hughes and Kishwana Jefford.
The matter was heard at the Linden Magistrates’ Court by Magistrate Rushell Liverpool.

In October 2025, Sears and another man were nabbed with a quantity of ganja during a police stop and search operation at Bamia, Region 10.
In a statement police said that a police team was on mobile patrol duties in the vicinity of the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint in Linden when they arrested Sears and Albert Sandy, a 69-year-old farmer of Tacama, Upper Berbice River who were found to be in possession of 310.71 kilograms of Cannabis.
According to the police, while on patrol duties, the ranks were conducting random ‘stop and search’, when they stopped a dark blue Toyota Hiace minibus, bearing registration number BAJ 4486, property of Region #10 Tourism Committee Inc. The vehicle was driven by Sears, a 39-year-old educator and political activist from Mackenzie, Linden and he was accompanied by Sandy who was seated in the front passenger seat.
Police discovered twenty-two bulky black plastic bags and four large brown canvas bags inside the vehicle containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Sandy admitted ownership, stating that the narcotics belonged to him and that he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika.
Meanwhile, Sears in a statement to the media after the case was dismissed said, “Today, the court dismissed all charges against me, bringing to a close a chapter that has tested me, my family, my loved ones, and all those who stood beside me throughout this ordeal.”
The former Member of Parliament said throughout the case, he has maintained his innocence and “Today, that truth has prevailed”. He thanked the magistrate for “her careful consideration of the facts and her commitment to the principles of fairness and justice” while thanking his legal team, family, friends and supporters.
“I also wish to acknowledge the professionalism with which I was treated by members of the Guyana Police Force especially those in whose care I was for almost three weeks when bail was refused,” he said.
“Today is not merely the end of a case. It is the restoration of truth and for that, I am profoundly grateful,” Sears concluded.
