Shevon Gittens prevails as Cheddi Jagan Memorial Race Walk concludes
Shevon Gittens, a student from the President’s College, walked strategically and eventually claimed the Khursuid Sattaur trophy when the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CS&TC) staged the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Race Walk event Sunday March 9 last.
Samuel Saul walked in second while Dyral Sancho clinched the third place spot. Two females, Isanella Patoir and Twedale Marks sealed off the two top spots respectively. Walkers commenced the journey in front of the President’s College, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, at 06:30hrs and proceeded to the village market before returning to the place of origin for the finish.
Gittens showed some measure of consistency after she had captured the Ming’s Products and Services trophy in the Forbes Burnham Anniversary Race Walk at the same venue earlier in the month; she had out-walked a field of over fifty participants. The second and third place finishers in that race were Samuel Saul and Dyral Sancho, respectively.
Walkers also competed for prizes donated by Ansa Mcal and Modem Optical Services. Meanwhile, race walkers will be in action once again on Sunday March 16 next when their parent body stages the final event in observance of the late head of state. They will convene at the Bank of Guyana and proceed along Main Street up to the Cheddie Jagan Research Institute for the finish.
The following day, the walkers will travel up the East Bank to the Soesdyke community to engage in a 10K race, this time for junior athletes. The race starts at Calvin Gilkes’ residence, Back Road Soesdyke, proceeds around the periphery of the village and returns to that point for the finish.
