Another man who was held in connection with the failed robbery committed on a West Coast Berbice businessman has been remanded to jail.
Quammy Bhagwandin, 32, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam appeared in the Blairmont Magistrates’ court before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver on two counts of discharging a loaded firearm with intent to rob and another of assault with intent to rob.
He and his colleagues are accused of attempting to rob the businessman and his son on February 13, last, at Bath Settlement West Coast Berbice.
The businessman, who has several businesses on the West Coast Berbice, had closed up his business and was about to enter his home some time between 19:30 hrs and 20:00 hrs when he was accosted by the bandits.
He put up a fight, causing the bandit to discharge a round. Ranks from the Fort Wellington Police Station responded promptly. The three bandits who were armed with a shot gun and pistols were forced to flee in their getaway vehicle.
The cops gave chase, forcing the bandits to head over the Berbice River Bridge. In the interim back up was sent for and the cops had set up a roadblock on the eastern side of the bridge.
The bandits, after crossing the river and realising that they were cornered abandoned their vehicle and headed into the bushy and swampy area at Palmyra.
Two men, Paul Kumar, 44, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam and Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara; along with Richard Semple 39, a taxi driver of Kilcoy Village Corentyne, Berbice, were charged earlier and remanded to jail.
Bhagwandin, who was wanted for a number of crimes and had been on the run, was captured by alert ranks when he turned up at the Sisters Magistrate Court for an impending matter.
Bhagwandin will also be questioned about a number of other robberies. He was also wanted in connection with the break and enter that occurred at C and K Pharmacy and Drugs store.
Police had recovered a number of items from a dilapidated house at Angoy’s Avenue which was frequented by Bhagwandin.
