Security Guard Kenneth Kanhai, called “Puri”, 56, of Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, Berbice who was attached to the Home Safe Security Service and was found dead on February 13, died from cerebral hemorrhage due to gunshot injuries.
This is according to a post mortem examination conducted by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Kanhai was found lying in a pool of blood on a desk with what appears to be a gunshot wound to the forehead and another to the body on Thursday morning at Canefield Nursery School, East Canje where he works as a security guard.
Kanhai was expected to be a key witness in an upcoming murder trial in the high court in which he was expected to give evidence in the murder trial of American citizen Ramdhanie Persaud called ‘Prackash’ or ‘Prack’ who is indicted on the charge of murdering his wife Bibi Shameena Deen.
Kanhai was previously before the court on a number of charges including received, comfort, harbor, assisted and mentor the said Persaud. He was also charged with Possession of Arms and Ammunition without licence and accessory after the fact to wit he assisted a murder accused after he had committed the capitol offence.
The police had arrested Kanhai at a farm at Bess Cut, New Forest East Canje Berbice where they found one .38 Special Revolver, 23 -16 gauge cartridges and seven live 12 gauge cartridges. A test of the weapon showed that it was used to kill Deen. Kanhai had told investigator that his cousin Persaud had hid the weapon there.
The school has no guard hut and the guards would usually go inside the building since they were given a key.
Kanhai reportedly received two gunshots call and knowing the person he put on the light and went to the window where he was shot at close range to his forehead. He turned to escape and was shot again in his back.
The school wasn’t broken into and nothing was lost or disturbed. A mattress was also found nearby.
The police had arrested a number of persons including a close associate of murder accused Ramdhanie Persaud and a lone female. They were all subsequently released on station bail after giving statements. Some of their stories did not add up. However investigations are ongoing and police are sure they will crack the case. The cops are certain they have a tap on the case from the direction in which the evidence is going.
Kanhai is survived by his wife Jagwantie Jidayal called “Mini” a weeder at the Rose Hall Estate to whom he was married for 35 years, his son who lives overseas, parents and numerous other relatives.
