A 16-year-old student of Tucville Secondary School was ordered to pay a fine by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmonds at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The teenage boy who is a resident of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of an offensive weapon when it was read to him.
The charge in question, detailed that on January 20, at Commerce Street, Georgetown he had in his possession, a cutlass without reasonable excuse.
According to the Prosecutor Lance Corporal Jomo Nichols, it was around 13:00 hours that day when police ranks noticed the youngster on Commerce Street, acting in a suspicious manner.
As he was walking, he was reportedly stopped by the ranks and the search revealed a cutlass hidden in his haversack. When question, he could not have supplied the ranks with a reasonable account for it.
However, when the student pleaded guilty, he stated that it was not a cutlass but rather a large knife which was concealed in his school bag. Magistrate Chandan-Edmonds fined him a total of $15,000 for the crime.
