An early morning fire yesterday destroyed a mechanic shop located in an old building on 121 Waterloo Street, and left in its aftermath the scorched neighbouring business premises of Doctor Gansham Singh.
The owner of the mechanic shop, Thajmaul “Cappy” Drepaul, who operated out of the old building that was burnt, said that he suspects the work of arsonists. According to Drepaul someone attempted to burn
the building prior to this event.
He said that he was able to contain the fire the first time around but since he doesn’t live at the Waterloo Street residence he was unaware of when the second fire started. When he arrived the building was already engulfed.
Drepaul said that he has no problems with anyone and didn’t owe anyone anything. In fact, he said, persons owed him for works completed, so he is dumfounded about why something like this would happen.
The Mechanic expressed said that he has lost over $500,000 in equipment and parts used in his line of work. The mechanic’s nephew who works with him was sifting through the rubble at the request of Drepaul to see if he could find any salvageable tools, however whatever was found could not be used because it was too badly burnt.
According to the Drepaul, the mango tree in the yard that was burnt helped prevent the fire from spreading to the other houses that were built very close to each other within the area.
At the scene after the fire, Drepaul was working under the engine of a vehicle in front of the burnt building, while another vehicle which was parked in front of the
premises during the fire was still there with burns across the side.
When asked about the way forward the mechanic said that he is awaiting word from the Insurance Company, Hand-In-Hand, about the building since it is covered by that entity. The man said that he and his partner, Terry Bobb, owned the building.
