Foreign athletes depleted for SA 10k Classic -Only Suriname has registered
Foreign athletes’ participation for Sunday’s International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)/Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) South American 10km Road Race Classic will be at an all time low with notable countries not registering.
Officials from the AAG, including President, Aubrey Hutson, had encouraged local athletes to get involve in the event at the launch and also expressed hope that the usual foreign participants will register on or before the October 18 deadline.
However, a check yesterday at the Guyana Olympic Association Headquarters where the Admin office for the AAG is also located revealed that none of the expected strong foreign participating countries have confirmed participation in the 2013 race.
Only Suriname, which usually poses little or no challenge, has registered. The South American 10km Classic race usually attracts participation from several Caribbean countries with Trinidad and Tobago sending large contingents along with Brazil.
The race has in the past attracted the participation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Pamenos Ballantyne, who is also a top Caribbean distance athlete. Distance runners from the United States and other regional countries were also represented in the past.
However, this year it seems as though the race will just be a local contest, which will undermine its very name as a South American race. As of yesterday too, only 51 local athletes were named to registration forms, which was far fewer than the locally-orchestrated Courts and Ainlim 10km Road Races a few weeks ago.
