Police in Berbice are “very close” to cracking the case involving the slain Hampshire businessman, Devendra ‘Dave’ Deodat, 34, of Lot 72 Hampshire Squatting Area. Deodat was gunned down earlier this week.
Five persons are now in custody, pending an identification parade scheduled for today, and to be attended by Mala Deodat, the man’s wife. She, along with her husband, was able to unmask one of the three gunmen who shot and killed her husband.
A family member said last evening, that none of the ten security cameras installed in and around the building and compound was in operation at the time of the attack. This caused a severe blow to the investigations as many were hoping that the entire ordeal would have been recorded.
According to the man’s father-in-law, who is still hospitalized in the city, the gunmen wore hoodies, were dressed in black and had cloth over their faces.
The gunmen entered the shop shortly after 18:00 hrs. The couple’s 14- year- old daughter, Sareeta, raised an alarm, to which her father, who had just arrived home and had settled in the living room, responded.
He was shot in the chest in a chair in the very living room. The bandits then made their way to the upper flat of the building where they demanded cash and jewellery. The perpetrators escaped with $560,000, one gold band, a laptop computer and one cell phone.
Neighbour Kamla Ramoo stated that the gunmen spent more than 40 minutes in the building and “had sufficient time to do what they had to do.”
Deodat was also the owner of Cool Runnings Trucking Service. The man’s wife received several chops to the head and her father, Rafeek Abdul, 47, was shot in the left arm. He remains a in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Mala is still experiencing pains in her head and still has to make frequent visits to the Anamayah Memorial Hospital for treatment.
A post- mortem performed on Deodat on Wednesday at the N/A Hospital concluded that Deodat died of shock and hemorrhage due to gunshot wounds. He is expected to be buried on Monday.
