Even as women battle against inequality issues while enforcing their roles in the developmental process, several influential women of the Melanie Damishana ECD have formed a club dubbed ‘The Taurus Women’s Club’ with an aim of empowering the women of that community and its environs.
The entity would be officially launched this Saturday, October 12 with a workshop under the theme ‘The Role of Women in the Development of the Community.’ Public Service Minister, Jennifer Westford, will deliver the keynote address before declaring the club open.
The initial membership comprises 25 energetic women who will be guided by the theme, ‘Empowering women, educating children. They will embark on skills training programmes in several areas including cooking, sewing, handicraft production and information technology.
The club will engage in several other activities including sports and culture, exhibitions and workshops, fund raising and economic activities. They will also engage in Information technology and handicraft production. Administrators are also working on the establishment of a Learning and Earning Centre to tap in on the skills of the membership while fostering their development.
The club recently held elections and Sharon Moffat has been elected to chair the committee, while Coretta Hollingside is her second in command. The Secretary/Treasurer is Odessa Moffat and the Assistant Secretary/treasurer is Yvonne Douglas Edwards. The five committee members are Romone Archer, Odessa Junor, Patricia Punch, Carolyn Saul and Vanessa John.
