Mackenzie High defeat New Silver City on penalty kicks
Mackenzie High School defeated New Silver City 4-3 on penalties in their Digicel/Powerade Schools football match yesterday at the Wisburg Secondary School Ground in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.

The teams were locked 1-1 after regulation time, but Mackenzie High custodian Leon Grenville pulled off two remarkable saves during the shootout to send New Silver City crashing out of the competition.
Both teams started in attacking fashion, but Mackenzie High dominated possession in the first half, nevertheless New Silver City managed to keep up with the pace and their number 04 Carlos Blackman gave them the lead in the 34th minute when he slotted home a rebound from just outside the 18 yards box after Grenville failed to hold on to the shot.
Mackenzie High tried desperately for the equalizer but didn’t succeed as New Silver City went to the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Both teams looked more purposeful in the second half, but it was Mackenzie High’s number 10, Kelon Primo who found the equalizer moments after the interval. He rocked the nets with a curling free kick some 20 yards from goal after he was pulled down in the 47th minute.
The teams continued to hunt for the winner but despite several attempts, the game had to be decided by penalties. Kentroy Batson had the opportunity to give his team, New Silver City the lead, but his first shot was blocked by Grenville.
Shaka Lewis wasted little time in converting as Mackenzie High took the lead. David Sanichar then beat Grenville to his left to put New Silver on the score sheet before Kelon Primo converted for Mackenzie High.
Grenville then saved Tellon Smith’s shot, but Taffon Alexander sent his past New Silver City goalie Martin Leacock as Mackenzie maintained the advantage. Omalie Webb gave New Silver City hope when he blasted past Grenville.
Adriel Mendonca then saw his kick saved by Leacock while City’s Mark Mc Lean sent Grenville the wrong way with their fifth and final shot. It was left up to Mackenzie’s Akeem Higgins to seal the issue for his team and he had little trouble in doing so as he fired his shot past Leacock.
