The August holidays are almost upon us and officials of the National Sports Commission, in their continuing efforts to promote and develop sports in Guyana, are already putting the modalities in place for a successful venture as they once again organize camps for their ‘Teach Them Young’ programmes during this period.
A press release from the National Sports Commission (NSC) informs that organizers are planning approximately three hundred camps in three administrative regions, Essequibo, Berbice and Linden as well as some interior locations. Activities will include cricket, swimming, cycling, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, chess and football among other disciplines.
Cricket sessions will be held along the East Coast corridor at Enterprise Community Centre, Enmore Community Centre and the Helena No. 2 Cricket Ground. Interested persons may contact Latchman Yadram (229-6286/ 647-8714), Herman Persaud (643-3033) or Rajan Tiwari (652-9570).
Cycling activities will be conducted by Hassan Mohamed at the National Park between July 08 – September 07 and the facilitator could be contacted at telephone #s 226-0703 and 623-0736. Linden Johnson will oversee the table tennis sessions and he can be reached at telephone # 621-7630.
Those interested in participating in swimming activities are informed that those activities will be conducted at the Colgrain Swimming Pool on July 8 – August 12 under the guidance of Cuban coach, Isabel Maria Couso Fals with the support of five other local coaches. Children 6 – 11 years will be accommodated between 09:00hrs – 10:15hrs, while sessions for children 12-16 years will be conducted between 10:30hrs – 11:35hrs.
Further, there will be a ‘Learn to Swim’ programme sometime in September details and other information will be provided shortly.
Application forms can be uplifted at Colgrain Swimming Pool from June 10 during office hours or interested persons may contact Desiree Cummings (226-0387) or Abraham Watson (222-1306/ 649-5562) before the closing date, July 2.
