Baugh hits 99, Johnson slams half century

Left arm spinner Nikita Miller and leg spinner Odean Brown shared eight wickets between them to hand Jamaica a 215 run win over Guyana on day 3 in their West Indies Cricket Board Regional 4 day tournament yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Miller grabbed 4-49 from 25 overs and Brown claimed 4-54 from 25.3 overs to restrict Guyana whose batsmen, with the exception of Leon Johnson and to a lesser extent Narsingh Deonarine, lacked commitment and application, for 155 in 75.3 overs after they were set 370 for victory; play was extended by half an hour.

With an overall lead of 295, five-time defending champions Jamaica resumed the day on their overnight total of 183-5 and extended their innings to one hour and forty-five minutes into the first session before rain disrupted play which finally saw the declaration come at 11:15 hours at 257 for eight.
Carlton Baugh Jr and Jermaine Blackwood took their overnight 96-run partnership to 138 before Blackwood, who played the supporting role to Baugh lost his leg stump to Steven Jacobs for 57. His fifty came off 113 balls and contained three fours.
Baugh, who dispatched the Guyanese bowlers to all parts of the ground and seemingly set for his thirteen first-class century, was run out for 99 by a direct hit from Narsingh Deonarine at mid off.
Baugh, clearly disturbed by the dismissal, slammed his bat into the ground then went down on his knees before making his way to the pavilion. His innings which was the corner stone of Jamaica’s total, came off 143 balls and included nine fours and one six.
Nikita Miller (08) was the other batsman to be dismissed for eight before the declaration. Steven Jacobs bagged 4-61 and Veerasammy Permaul 3- 64.
Guyana victory hunt
Guyana run chase got off to a bad start when Assad Fudadin played across the line and was leg before to Andrew Richardson for 03 just before lunch with the score on 6.
After the break, Chanderpaul Hemraj (05) who was asked to open with Fudadin nicked one to stand-in wicketkeeper Brenton Parchment off David Bernard Jr before Leon Johnson and Narsingh Deonarine resurrected the Guyanese innings somewhat by adding 43 for the third wicket; Guyana went to tea at 59-2 with Johnson on 30 and Deonarine on 02.
After the interval, Guyana lost Deonarine who failed to read a googly from Brown and skied a return catch with the score on 70.
Leon Johnson, who pulled Tamar Lambert to mid wicket and drove Miller to mid off for boundaries, soon brought up his half century which contained three fours off 126 balls.
With the score on 118, Bramble (18) edged Miller to first slip where Danza Hyatt accepted an easy catch before Johnson was bowled by Miller for 70 (5×4). His innings lasted 218 minutes and 174 balls.
Miller then had Steven Jacobs caught for 12 at 143 before Devendra Bishoo (01) made no attempt to play at a delivery from Brown and was leg before at 144. Miller who maintained a consistent line and length then accounted for Rajendra Chandrika (05) without addition to the score, before Permaul, who pulled Brown to the mid wicket boundary, was caught at mid on off the said bowler for 06 at 150. Brown then performed the final rights by up rooting the stumps of Keon Joseph for 01 leaving Ronsford Beaton unbeaten on 04. Andrew Richardson (1-12) and David Bernard Jnr (1-15) were the other wicket takers for the winners.
At the Vivian Richards ground, Windward Islands defeated Leeward Islands by 9 wickets on the third day. Windwards reached their winning target of 23-1 after restricting Leewards for 158 in their second innings. Keiron Powell made 51 and Devon Thomas 28 for Leewards as Liam Sebastien captured 5-30 and Shane Shillingford 3-45. Scores: LEEWARDS 129 (Kieran Powell 51, Sylvester Joseph 33; Shane Shillingford 7-45, Garey Mathurin 2-38) and 158 (Kieran Powell 51, Devon Thomas 28; Liam Sebastien 5-30, Shane Shillingford 3-45)
WINDWARDS 268 (Liam Sebastien 93, Shane Shillingford 42, Garey Mathurin 30; Yannick Leonard 4-63, Sherwin Peters 3-19, Nelson Boland 2-49) and 23 for one.
