LFS Burnham 90th Birth Anniversary 2-stage 90km road race
Roraima Bikers Club’s Alonzo Greaves recorded another fine win yesterday, cantering to victory in the 90th Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham Birth Anniversary 90km 2-Stage Road Race held on the East Bank and East Coast.
The race, which has taken on the two-stage format for the first time in its five-year history, was sponsored by the Burnham Foundation and organized by the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF).
Greaves, who won stage-one from Homestretch Avenue to Coverden and back, while placing third in stage-two held from Ocean View International Hotel to Belfield and return, recorded an overall time of Two Hours 31 Minutes 36 Seconds to end a successful weekend having won the feature 35-lap contest on Saturday in the National Park.
Second overall, was reigning National Road Race champion Orville Hinds who crossed the line as the second best in both stages; he was one second slower than the overall winner. Geron Williams took the third position in 2: 31.40, while Robin Persaud, who won stage-two, placed fourth overall in 2:31.57. Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay (2:32.17) and Paul Choo-Wee-Nam (2:32.18) ended fifth and sixth respectively.
Copping the junior category was Alonzo Ambrose from Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony in that order. Raul Leal who would have been in contention for a position in this category was disqualified (first stage) for flouting the rule which said no feeding during the race.
Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton made a welcome return to winning ways by copping the veteran division, Junior Niles had to settle for the second spot with Talim Shaw, third.
National Road Race Queen, Hazina Barrett was the top female with Naiomi Singh second.
Cash prizes were awarded to the 1st to 3rd place stage winner’s; top six overall, top three juniors, veterans and the two female riders.
Hinds, Williams and Eric Sankar each captured two of the 12 prime prizes with one each to Mark Lewis, Andrew Reece, Anthony, Persaud, Greaves and Walter Grant-Stuart.
In remarks before the presentation of prizes, representative of the Burnham Foundation, Vincent Alexander, while complimenting the 50-riders that participated and made the event a success, stated that the Late LFS Burnham was an ardent lover and supporter of sports in Guyana and were he alive, he would have been doing the same thing the foundation is doing. He thanked the GCF for their continued support of the event while noting calls for a stage of the race to be held in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
GCF President Cheryl Thompson, who also brought brief remarks, said the event was a prestigious one and this year it was very competitive and the level of discipline displayed by all was excellent. Ms. Thompson like Alexander complimented the Guyana Police Force for performing outstanding duties during the two stages of the event.
