– Attorney General
Attorney General Anil Nandlall says that government has acquired six possession notices against some of the persons who currently occupy the First Federation Building, at Croal Street Stabroek. Government is pushing to regain full occupancy of the building which they say would be used to improve facilities for the justice system.
The notice of possession is a document issued to inform a party of the intention to retake possession of certain property, in this case the “First Federation Building”. This type of document is often used by landlords who are evicting tenants. In such a case, the landlord provides the tenant with a deadline by which to vacate the premises and turn over the keys to the property. Sometimes a notice of possession may also be used when a mortgage lender is foreclosing on a property.
Nandlall told Kaieteur News yesterday that with the six possession notices being given, he hopes that the other occupants recognize that the government needs the building to house important judicial offices. According to the Attorney General, he is extremely displeased with some of the occupants who happen to be Attorneys-at-law. He said that these lawyers ought to recognize the value of having greater space being made available for the justice sector in close proximity to existing facilities.
Nandlall noted that some of the lawyers who occupy this “derelict” building “should be ashamed”, since he pointed out that the building does not have any washroom facilities, no lighting in the corridors, and the bottom flat is flooded whenever it rains heavily.
The First Federation Building has for decades served as offices for a number of prominent Attorneys-at-Law. Occupants of the building also include a private school. Apart from the six possession notices all the occupants have been notified about government’s intention to reclaim full possession of the building. Lawyers who operate from the building have challenged the move.
Kaieteur News understands that several Attorneys who have offices in the building, have already commenced filing injunctions to stay the notices of possession.
