The replacement works of the hydraulic ramp at the Demerara Harbour Bridge have been successfully completed way ahead of schedule. This is according to Rawlston Adams, the General Manger of the Demerara Harbour Bridge who made the announcement during a media briefing yesterday.
According to Adams, initially they had issued a notice to the public that the works would have disrupted traffic as of April 29 through May 5. However, as at 18:00 hours on Tuesday the works were completed and the bridge reopened to two-way traffic. The works were done at a cost of some $40M which was provided for in last years’ budgetary allocation.
Commenting on the works done on the bridge, Adams said that on Sunday the engineers removed and replaced the southern half of the ramp and at that point they realized that works were going better than planned.
“Having done this on Monday we were able to open the bridge to two-way traffic as the work on the eastern half was also done in a timely manner.” Adams further reported that on Monday they were able to fully use the bridge.
However, Adams said that later today he will be in a better position to pronounce on when the works on the western hydraulic ramp will commence. Later today he will be meeting with the shipping agents and other stakeholders to discuss when would be a suitable time. He however suggested that works could commence in the coming week or the week after.
Adams apologized to the travelling public for the inconvenience but noted that the repairs were necessary for the upkeep of the bridge. Adams said the management of the bridge is thankful for the assistance given to them from the Guyana Police Force traffic department.
And touching on the issue of other maintenance works, Adams said that within another few months they are expected to replace some 150 anchor blocks on the bridge, and two new pontoons.
The hydraulic ramps were last replaced in 1998.
