A visually-impaired father is pleading with the public to assist him financially, in order to
prevent his 11-year-old daughter from ending up in a similar condition.
Paul Cottam of lot 127 Trench Road East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, has been suffering from cataract in both eyes for almost six years and he is scared that one day, his daughter might suffer the same fate.
Cottam has since been financially supporting his family with whatever public assistance he receives monthly.
His daughter, Paula, a St. Angela’s Primary School student, was diagnosed with having “a complicated cataract with a blind right eye” since she was seven years old.
Recently, she was also diagnosed with “Inferior Retinal Detachment with macula involvement with Development Cataract” in her left eye.
Her father is now trying to avoid his daughter from going completely blind, hence he is appealing to the public to assist him financially to fly her to Trinidad and Tobago for a very important surgery.
A local doctor has advised that Paula Cottam needs to be evaluated by a vitreo-retinal surgeon. That service is not available in Guyana, so a doctor in Trinidad has been consulted and the little girl is required to be in the twin-island republic on April 18, where she will be examined by Dr. Bruno A. Mitchell.
The approximate cost of the surgery is US$3,300.
The Ministry of Health will be assisting the family with US$2,000. The father is pleading for assistance with the remaining amount and the travel fare.
Persons desirous of assisting the family can contact Paul Cottam at 231-2361 or 692-5223. An account has also been opened at Republic Bank Limited to facilitate contributions to the cause. The account number is 2444065.
