Persons have been known to take private planes and travel the world – It has just not caught on here. With Friday’s landing, the Ministry of Tourism hopes a new and exciting way of attracting more tourists to these shores would develop.
Mr. & Mrs. Norman and Mr. and Mrs. Durken – the Canadian tourists – are here on a three day vacation.
Durken, who is a member of the Buttonville Flying Club, told the media that there were supposed to be nine private planes landing Friday but because of “circumstances the others had to cancel. We continued to plan the trip here.”
When asked why he chose to come here, Durken said that he was influenced by two persons who are originally from Guyana.
“One of the members who were organizing the trip before is from Guyana and another pilot I know is from here (Guyana) as well and he was organizing the Guyana part of the trip,” Durken explained.
The touring couples who left Grenada to come to here said that their first journey was to the Kaieteur Falls, yesterday.
On Monday they will be leaving to continue their journey into St. Lucia.
The Director of Guyana Tourism Authority, Indranauth Harralsingh, said that they want to encourage flying clubs from various parts of the world to come to Guyana and enjoy a “hearty welcome.” That in a sense will make them want to “spread the word” thus assist in developing the country.
He added that they are working with the Yacht Association of Trinidad and Tobago to encourage yachts to come to Guyana as well as small planes. (Romila Boodram)
