The East Canje Lion’s Club on Sunday held a free Eye Clinic at the Adelphi Market in Canje where over 150 persons were afforded the benefit of having their eyes examined and checked by professional eye care specialists. The patients were issued spectacles on the spot as well.
Past President of the Lion’s Club, Devin Sookraj stated that the outreach became a reality through a kind gesture by Canadian- based Guyanese, Travick Bahadur, who responded to the need after seeing numerous articles about the works of the East Canje Lion’s Club in the press.
“He saw the numerous projects we were doing on the internet and decided to send 150 glasses so we thank him very much”, he stated. “He wants to help us much more so we can provide to the people out there”, he said.
The joint project between the East Canje Lion’s Club and New Amsterdam Lion’s Club also saw the referral of numerous patients with serious eye problems to the National Ophthalmology Hospital at Port Mourant.
The Club already has finished five projects for the year already. They gave out several wheelchairs and hampers to the needy.
According to President of the Club, Madan Ramadar, some upcoming activities of the E/C Lion’s Club include feeding programmes in schools where hot meals and stationary and clothing would be provided to needy school- children.
During the outreach, a presentation of another hundred spectacles was also made by OIston Beresford of London, a friend of the E/C Lion’s Club and a regular donor. The East Canje Lion’s Club received seven awards from Lion’s International in 2011 for being an outstanding club.
