Fruta Conqueror’s U-15 ‘A’ team amassed 18 points and a positive goal average of 14

to cart off the top prize when the curtains came down on the Lester Peters U-15 memorial football tournament at the Tucville Ground Monday afternoon last.
Flamingo FC accrued 14 points and a positive goal average of 6 goals to claim the second prize, while the Fruta Conqueror’s ‘A’ team sealed off the podium spots with 13 points and a positive 3 goal average.
The tournament was organized by the Fruta Conquerors club under the shrewd guidance of its coach Sampson Gilbert, and got underway on October 31 last. Each team played seven matches apiece and were awarded 3 points for every victory registered. One point was awarded for drawn games while those teams that won by default was awarded a total of 3 points and allotted 2 goals.
Mr. Gilbert said that the tournament was planned with a bifurcated objective—to memorialize the death of Peters, a vibrant member of the club who recently passed away and to continue the club’s developmental programmes towards youth development.
President of the Conquerors FC, Marlon Cole was on hand to distribute the respective prizes and commended his coach on the hard work and commitment demonstrated throughout the tournament. He also issued similar sentiments to the participants while urging them to maintain the high level of discipline witnessed throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, the late footballer’s mother, Gloria Peters, was present at the venue and received a trophy in commemoration of her son’s contribution to the club. She said that she was happy that her son’s contribution helped to shape the culture of the Fruta Conqueror’s unit. Several other players received special prizes including the Black Pearl United for being the Most Disciplined team. Jamal McPherson scored a tournament high 6 goals and received the Most Valuable Player prize, while Kelsie Benjamin was adjudged the most improved player. Brazilian national, Fernando O’Liviera copped the prize for the best goalkeeper. A total of seventy goals were scored during the competition.
Several corporate bodies and individuals teamed up to donate the trophies and beverages towards the success of the tournament including Robert Selman of the Guyana Beverages Company, Mark Young of the Sports Desk, Oasis Water, Guinness Bar, Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Sampson Gilbert.
