Former senior national table tennis player, Colin France teamed up with junior national player,
Denzel Hopkinson to win the Senior Men’s Doubles title when competition continued in the Powerade National Table Tennis Championships at the National Gymnasium.
France and Hopkinson defeated Nigel Bryan and Dwayne Dick 4-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5 and 11-1 in the men’s doubles final after the latter pair had the eventual winners down in the first two sets of the five-set final. The come-from-behind win was exhilarating.
France’s experience proved crucial in the win. His excellent form continued after he had placed third at a recent major competition in Trinidad and Tobago. France and his partner outdid Edhino Lewis and Paul Meusa in straight sets 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6 in the semi-finals.
Bryan and Dick got to the final after beating Hewley Griffith and Joel Alleyne 11-4, 11-4 and 11-9, setting up what became an intriguing battle against France and Hopkinson. Bryan and Dick would be disappointed that they did not put away their opposition after leading two sets.
Meanwhile, Trenace Lowe and Chelsea Edghill formed one of the most formidable forces in the sport in the Women’s Doubles contest. The duo easily topped pairs, Jody-Ann Blake and Natalie Cummings; and Saskeia Chung and Akiecia Nedd in the round-robin final to win that title.
Lowe added her name for the first time in the 2011 Championships to the titles list. Up to Kaieteur Sport press time last night competition in the ‘B’ Class and U-21 competitions had commenced.
