-reaffirms his position to not represent region
By Edison Jefford
Former national fast bowler, Trevor Benn has indicated that he never clarified any issue with the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) as was previously reported. He said the missive that appeared in Kaieteur Sport on October 17, 2011 was solely the ECB’s perspective.
Benn apparently withdrew his services from the region after alleging that an official, who is part of the selection of the senior representative team, mentioned to him that he will never be selected on any Essequibo team.
The official’s statement became fact when Benn was later omitted from the Inter-County limited overs team that represented Essequibo. The cricketer, who is also a sprinter at the Guyana Police Force, said that he subsequently wrote the ECB requesting to play for Demerara or the Rest Team.
However, following these series of incidents and a meeting between Benn and the ECB on October 1, a release was made on October 17 captioned “ECB and Trevor Benn clarify issue”, that Benn says a false account of what really transpired.
“At no time did I clarify any issue with the ECB. I am standing by my position to not represent Essequibo, which is why I believe that they are trying to cool down the matter. I stated that I do not want to represent Essequibo clearly at the meeting,” Benn said yesterday.
He said that the treatment meted out to him is nothing short of disrespectful after he had dedicated so much to representing the local region. He informed that he used his own resources to travel to Essequibo to play, and for practice, yet he was snubbed.
Chairman of the East Bank Essequibo Cricket Committee, Alvin Johnson, in a release that was carried in Chronicle Sport last Thursday and which this newspaper has seen yesterday, said that the ECB selectors “got it all wrong” to omit Benn from the team.
“I was at the Executive meeting of the ECB on October 1 when the matter was raised with the consensus being that there was no just reason for Mr. Benn’s omission and that the selectors got it all wrong,” Johnson said in the document.
He also indicated that the “ECB and Trevor Benn clarify issue” missive on the matter gives the impression that the Board and Benn had mutually resolved the bones of contention. Johnson said that was not the case and listed the outcomes of the meeting.
The outcomes were as follows: that the selectors erred by omitting Mr. Benn; that Mr. Benn expressed how embarrassed he was and still is and had not withdrawn his resignation; that Mr. Benn was still needed and is very much a part of the Essequibo’s cricket; that Mr. Benn is a hyperactive cricketer who’s aggression, taunting and body language sometimes annoy the opposition-he needs to tone down and that Mr. Johnson was positive about influencing Mr. Benn to withdraw his resignation.
