World renowned Hockey Coach Shiv Jagday speaking with Kaieteur Sport following the conclusion of another round on coaching at the National Stadium on Thursday revealed how satisfied he was with the commitment displayed by participants who attended the five-day Coaching Course he conducted which was scheduled to end yesterday.
Jagday, who is a former national coach of both Canada and the USA, was chosen as the facilitator of the course which was made possible through the Guyana Olympic Association in collaboration with Olympic Solidarity and the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) and ran from Monday until yesterday.

World renowned Hockey Coach India’s Shiv Jagday (extreme left) poses with some of the participants of the five-day Coaching Course which he conducted.
According to Jagday since the beginning, the participants have shown significant improvements after every session and this he referred to as extremely impressive given the fact that it was all done in a short space of time.
He added that the progress he has seen since his arrival gives him a sense on contentment, pointing out that he is satisfied that with the right commitment by the Guyana Hockey Board and the clubs combined the sport could very shortly enjoy the birth of new players.
Jagday, who had visited Guyana on a few occasions previously to conduct similar stints, said that he is willing to come sometime in the future to facilitate more courses, but more importantly to assess what work followed after his departure.
He was adamant that representatives clubs and the GHB collaborate to draft a document that could witness a more concerted attempt by the two parties to capture players, especially from the junior level to the sport.
“I think that with any development plan that might be in the pipeline, there has to be accommodation for ways to capture a new influx of players, especially those between the ages of 12-14 years. There is where the future of Guyana hockey lies,” Jagday advised.
During the period, the participants were taught the rudiments of passing; marking; steps to develop young hockey players; receiving & triangle play; 2 on 1, 3 on 2 strategies & tactics and mini hockey 4 on 3, 5 on 5 among others.
The Course included both practical and theoretical sessions. He reminded the players that ‘if you do not use what you’ve learnt, you will lose it’. Last evening the GOA and GHB held an appreciation ceremony for Jagday where Certificates of Attendance were to be presented to those that participated in the Course.
