Dear Editor,
It is amazing to see how low we have sunk in this country. Last week Tuesday, the Regional Education Officer in Region Six summoned three head teachers to her office to refute a newspaper article that exposed several schools without adequate amounts of furniture on the first day of school.
The three head teachers, whether they liked it or not, had to say publicly that their schools had no furniture problems, just to please the official. How hypercritical that these same administrators had to return to their schools that very day and endure seeing their students being seated uncomfortably.
What must have the teachers who work under those head teachers said when they heard how their head teachers lied to the media just to please the education officer?
Would I, as a head teacher, allow ANYONE to summon ME to refute what is plain for all to see? What wimps! You education officers are a waste of taxpayers’ money. You all supposed to see that the furniture is delivered before school starts. If it were MY job I would be touring the schools in my district weeks before school begins to see that yards are weeded and buildings are clean and furniture in place.
I would have asked all HMs to call me if any problems occur and I would have been there long before schools open. What is wrong with these lazy people? Fire them; they do not want to work but only to collect the money.
The summon of the head teachers was sparked by a photo carried in a daily newspaper on Tuesday about children being uncomfortably seated at a school in New Amsterdam. It is said that a picture speaks a thousand words. If furniture is short then the Regional Education Officer should address the situation rather than be embarrassed by a picture of students seated three in a bench and without a desk.
Officials in Guyana need to use the published articles as a means of investigating a problem rather than to see it as an attack on them. You can not be apprised of everything that happens in your district Mrs Education officer. If an article highlights a problem use it as a catalyst to investigate and take corrective actions.
Mind you, this is the same individual who said everything was rosy and well with the school in Black Bush when the students and parents protested the insanitary conditions there a few months ago.
The school was smelling and unclean for education delivery and yet this official blasted the parents who protested and tried her utmost on a newscast, to lambaste certain media houses that went in there to cover the story.
