Dear Editor,
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I was left speechless when I saw a picture of the returning officers for this year’s national elections.
Oh what a sight! I know none of these people personally and I am sure that they must have met some criteria for selection, but it was the racial composition that had me tongue tied.
That crowd looked nothing like Guyana. There were three Africans and all the others were Indians. Could we not find any Amerindians, mixed Guyanese or a Chinese?
I write to you Editor not because I think that these people are not qualified, but because yet again an agency chooses to engage in what I view to be triumphalism. The ratio of Indians in the population is not 80%, yet that is their representation on the list of returning officers.
Was it that difficult to find other Guyanese of various ethnicities to fill these positions thus creating some type of balance? Sometimes Mr. Editor, perception is reality, and a picture is really worth a thousand words. Mark Archer
