Guyana’s National Football team cataloged an historic record in June, 1984 with the defeat of India 3-nil at the Georgetown Cricket Club. The present senior football team, ‘Golden Jaguars’ plan to craft another historical record for Guyana, in their upcoming match which is slated today at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 19:30hrs.
The Golden Jaguars were encamped on August 19 at Raddison Suite for preparation for this game against India. The ‘Golden Jaguars’ usually train two sessions per day with their first in the mornings and second in the afternoons.
In an interview with Mr. Mark Xavier, Manager of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Football team during their second training session at University of Guyana ground, Turkeyen, Kaieteur Sport was told that the team is aspiring to make the World Cup Finals since Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica were two teams in the Caribbean that actually advanced in the World Cup Finals.
“The players are very motivated and the moral is very high within the camp…the assistant coach Mr. Wayne Dover is doing a great job in the physical aspects in the team preparation for their upcoming game against India and their other games with Barbados, Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago. We are prepared mentally and will be disciplined in our attack against our opponents and will also defend as a team as we try to make use of our scoring opportunities. “
According to the Manager, the team’s weakest area is preparation time for their friendly FIFA International game against India, “…our weakest area is time but it is not as important as this is a friendly international match and we will have enough preparation time on hand for our first game in the World Cup Qualifiers against Barbados which scheduled on September 2nd at the National Stadium.”
The Guyana Football Federation brought on broad one of the best coaches in the Caribbean from Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Jamaal Shabazz to train the ‘Golden Jaguars’ for their first round in the World Cup Qualifiers.
Kaieteur Sports was also informed that Mr. Shabazz was in Guyana in the year 2005 to 2008 for football purposes and is here again to execute his professional experience with the ‘Golden Jaguars’.
Mr. Xavier added that Guyana’s style of football is similar to Trinidad and Tobago, “I think that our style of football is somewhat similar to Trinidad and Tobago’s football…many Guyanese from the National team plays professional football in Trinidad and Tobago, United States, England and Canada… with this we can assemble a prominent Guyanese team with the locals to create History in the making of football and also to be on par with other teams in the Caribbean.
