– Govt. okays MMU restart
Seven international bodies are being invited to monitor Guyana’s upcoming General Elections.
Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said that invitations are to be extended to CARICOM, the Commonwealth, United Nations, Organization of American States (OAS), European Union, UNASUR and Carter Centre.
The government official made the disclosure yesterday during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing.
It was disclosed yesterday that the Media Monitoring Unit (MMU) which was reportedly closed last year after government wrote the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to stop funding, will be revitalized by a decision of Cabinet on Tuesday.
The absence of funding effectively shut operations down for the MMU.
In 2006, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) launched a 15-member independent MMU to help monitor media houses’ coverage of that year’s polls.
The body had its offices at the GECOM headquarters, Kingston, until its closure last year.
The MMU’s work includes the monitoring of every newspaper, talk-show and call-in programme.
Since 1992, Guyana has been allowing international observers in to keep an eye on the polling process to ensure fairness and transparency.
This year, General Elections were tentatively scheduled for mid-October, but GECOM re-opened the Claims and Objections period during which over 7,000 persons registered. A verification process to ensure no duplication and weed out any possibility of fraud will be conducted on the 7,000-plus names before the voters’ list is prepared.
Three parties – the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), the Alliance For Change (AFC) and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic – have already announced their Presidential Candidates.
