Young and aspiring Basketball players in Berbice have a chance to learn the game and improve their skills over the holiday period when the Berbice Basketball Association stages their annual basketball summer camp for youngsters in the East Berbice area.
The Clinic will begin tomorrow and is expected to end on the Friday August 5. The sessions will be held on Monday to Friday from 9am to 12 pm at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball court and is open to both girls and boys.
Kirk Fraser, who is the president of the Berbice Basketball Association (BBA) and is also a national basketball coach, is the coordinator and will be assisted by a number of other persons including some senior basketball players in Berbice. Speaking to the media, Fraser, who is a trained school teacher, said, the purpose of the clinic is to rekindle the interest in Basketball in the Berbice area which has been on the decline especially among the youngsters.
Another reason he stated is to help keep the youngsters off the streets and gainfully occupied during the holiday period. Keeping them occupied “…will help to instill disciple into the youngsters, and teach them about team work at an early age”, the coach said.
To play Basketball he said, “…you must have disciple and be a good team man, as Basketball is a team game.”
Fraser said that there are many Social ills in our Society today and the problems of School drop outs, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuse and delinquency is taking a toll on the younger population. To help fight these curses, “…we must organize activities to keep them occupied, and our support is also needed, they need our help,” he concluded.
During the sessions the youngsters are expected to be thought the basics of basketball which include passing, shooting, dribbling, intercepting among other moves.
Before the end of the sessions the youths will be involved in some community activities in and around the town of New Amsterdam. Certificates are also expected to be issued to the successful participants.

Meanwhile, the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association will recommence its basketball tournament shortly with a 3 on 3 competition at the Vryman’s Erven basketball court starting at 3pm in the afternoons. The competition is being sponsor by Yankee Boys Promotion and will see participation by all clubs in the ancient county.
At stake will be trophies and cash incentives.
While the Hilbert “Old Beef” Humphrey memorial Under-19 Competition will also commence shortly and will be played in the afternoons with four mixed teams participating. At stake are the Hilbert Humphrey Memorial Trophy and other incentives.
