The most successful team in the 20-plus year history of the Kashif & Shanghai tournament Bakewell Topp XX A has once again displayed a healthy appetite for knock-out tournaments by emerging as the top team in the Linden Zone of the GT&T FastBall knock-out football tournament.
The Bakewell boys dispatched Cool Runnings 2-0 in the final on Wednesday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground before an enthusiastic and involved crowd at the MSC.
Keon Sears in the 5th minute and Romain Haynes 2 minutes later were the players guiding their team to the Zone title and their place as one of seven Linden teams in the final round of 32 teams.
Linden has seen large crowds on every night of the preliminary round matches with the fans also showing a very good understanding of the innovative rules that governs this new invention.
The third place game saw Train Line edging Amelia’s Ward A team 2-1 on sudden penalty kicks after the two sides battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the 30 minutes of regulation time allotted.
Sherwin Waldron and Michael Isaacs were the players hitting the network from the penalty spot for Train Line with Amelia’s Ward goal touched in by Kevin Prowell.
In semi final action which preceded the third-place and final, Cool Runnings defeated Train Line 1-0 on sudden death penalty kicks, their game also ending 0-0 while Topp XX led by the resolute Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules with a hat-trick trounced Amelia’s Ward A 3-0. Hercules, who has been a prominent fixture with Topp XX as a player and coach for more than a decade, is still proving that he is a threat to any defense when he scored in the 12th minute and then sealed the deal with the blue ball in the 28th minute with a six second penalty.
The 7 teams that will represent Linden in the round of 32 which will commence on Sunday also at the MSC Ground are Topp XX A, Amelia’s Ward A & B teams, Train Line, Pioneers, Cool Runnings and Adams Rockers.

The semi finals and final were scheduled for last evening at the GFC Ground with the final four teams being War Mongers, Reggae Boyz along with BK International Western Tigers A & B teams.
Upsets continued to be the order of the day in the city and the biggest to date being Western Tigers’ B team’s demolition of a star studded Pele Gold featuring the likes of Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Mervin Liverpool, Manasseh Primo, Sean Johnson, Stellon David and Keoma Greavesande.
Pele Gold took the lead in the 21st minute through a Sheldon Austin goal but that advantage was cancelled out with a blue ball goal in the 28th minute when the dagger like goal was scored by Michael Henry. When the final whistle was sounded the GFC Ground was transformed into a carnival like atmosphere as the dozens of supporters of Western Tigers celebrated the astounding win.
In other results at the GFC on Wednesday, War Mongers needled Customs through an Anthony Sancho 27th minute strike.
Western Tigers A took care of GFC Masters 2-0, Dwayne Ali (10) and Jarrel Tyrell (25) the players on target while Reggae Boyz were 1-0 winners over Castello Schemers, Sherwin Vincent hitting the winning goal in the 2nd minute.
Meanwhile, the round-of-32 is set kick off on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground with four matches, three of which will rekindle the war between City and Linden sides. The other will see Grove, a team which has been responsible for knocking out Milerock (Linden) in the Kashif & Shanghai tournament aiming for another upset in this version of football when they open proceedings on Sunday against Train Line of Linden from 18:00hrs.
Amelia’s Ward A will then seek for a spot in the group-of-16 when they oppose Customs; The battle will become more heated when Warmongers comes up against Bakewell Topp XX A with the final match of the night featuring GFC Masters against Pioneers.
