Ogle-Thomas’s unbeaten ton spur Demerara to 283-run win against E’bo

Demerara crushed Essequibo by 283 runs in the first round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Female Inter-County 50-Over Cricket Competition yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground. Twenty-four year old West Indies female player June Ogle-Thomas spearheaded Demerara to 293-3 from 50 overs with an unbeaten 131. Watched by a small crowd which included her husband and daughter, the right-handed Ogle-Thomas hit five fours from 157 balls and added 105 for the first wicket with Onika Wallerson who made 30 to set the foundation for Demerara’s imposing total. Wallerson (3-5), Joan Vansertima (2-3), Prudence Williams (2-7) and Akaze Thompson (2-2) then combined to dismiss Essequibo for a record low 10 runs from 13.4 overs as the one-side contest was all over by 15:18hrs. Demerara won the toss and on a slow pitch in very hot conditions scored freely before Wallerson was lbw to Malini Jaikaran in the 19th over as the century opening stand was finally broken. Ogle-Thomas then added 92 for the second wicket with Abina Parker (24) before Skipper Sheneigh Calvan bowled Parker at 197-2. Victoria Bacchus (17) was removed by Rekha Roopnauth at 245-3 but Williams (16*) stayed with the in-form Ogle-Thomas to the end of the match as Ogle-Thomas reached the third century of her career. Essequibo lost senior left-hander Waheeda Bacchus (2) who seemed a bit unlucky to be given lbw to Thompson at 3-1 and never recovered as Venita Seusarran top-scored with three and five batters made ducks in an embarrassing display by the girls from the Cinderella County. The second round of the competition continues today with Berbice and Essequibo playing each other at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in Queenstown from 09.30hrs.
