Hosts Guyana made a strong start at this year’s Digicel’s Caribbean Areas Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships when some of their more established stars all won on opening day yesterday at the Georgetown Club on Camp Street.
Among those to register wins were last year’s Under-17 champion Mary Fung-a-Fat, who defeated Megan Piper in straight sets 11-3, 11-2, 11-2, while there were victories for the promising Akeila Wiltshire over Cayman Islands’ Lara Connelly 11-9, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7; Lauren Mahfood (Jamaica) beat OECS’ Zoe Sorrentino 11-5, 11-6, 11-4; Kevin Hennaway (OECS) dispatched Joven Benn (Guyana) 11-4, 11-6, 11-4; Jules Snagg (OECS) eased past Matthew McKenzie (Barbados) 11-5, 11-3, 11-2; Dana Soulter (Jamaica) outlasted Asha Gibbs (Barbados) in five gruelling sets 12-10, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6; Kristen Myren (Cayman Islands) beat Erica Robertson (Jamaica) 11-8, 10-12, 11-5, 14-12 and Rebecca Lowe (Guyana) lost to Megan Best (Barbados) 2-11, 9-11, 4-11. Meanwhile, Head Coach of Guyana Carl Ince in invited comments said that the locals performance has been right on cue, adding that the ones who were defeated were those from the developmental squad and lacked the necessary experience at this level.
He, however, reminded that the tournament is still in its early days and every match hereafter will be tough, but was optimistic that the players will do well and keep the winning trend.
Team Captain Deje Dias also expressed confidence about the team’s performance, but he too echoed the sentiments expressed earlier by Ince.
“The other teams have brought their best players to Guyana so we have to play at a very high level,” Dias said.
Alexander Arjoon, who too added some comments, revealed he was coming off a physically demanding schedule, but assured that once he plays consistently everything should be okay.
