Dear Editor
Funny how one unexpectedly learns things one has always wondered about. I have always been puzzled why, as a child, my nights on holiday on the Essequibo coast were always plagued by whining mosquitoes and their stings, while my relatives had no such problem.
Recently, a television cook had on display three varieties of garlic, one of which looked like a long shallot with a big head. He explained that the variety grew on the beaches in Italy and was ‘good’, because it kept mosquitoes away and one could relax completely.
I wondered how many people knew the effect garlic could have on mosquitoes – my (Indian) relatives were devoted garlic users. We live and learn.
