Acting Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite accepts the new Spanish envoy, Joaquin de Aristegui accreditation.
Plenipotentiary Representative (Designate) of Spain to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Joaquin de Aristegui, was accepted by the Acting Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite at a simple ceremony at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara yesterday.
The Spanish envoy said that Spain wants to move one level up in its relationship with CARICOM and to further identify areas of cooperation in the context of the next joint committee.
He noted that the CARICOM community lives in a region that has a profound Spanish leaning and the future would require that CARICOM look around to other Spanish speaking countries in the region as allies.
According to Ambassador Applewhatie, having been appointed as Spain’s ambassador to six CARICOM countries, Joaquin de Aristegui is no stranger to the region.
She said Spain has provided support for the diplomatic and Spanish language training of officials across the region.
And the Caribbean Community anticipates the convening of the third CARICOM/Spain joint commission to allow for review and determination of areas for future cooperation which would exploit the synergies between Spain and the region.
