– donor and recipient recovering quite well – Dr. Jindal
The fifth kidney transplant surgery to be performed in Guyana has been deemed “yet another success” by Dr. Rahul Jindal, who spearheaded the entire operation.
The surgery was performed on Friday, at the Balwant Singh Hospital,
Dr. Jindal said that 34-year-old Gopinauth Rampersaud, a bank clerk by profession, received his new kidney from his 32-year-old brother Kapildeo, who is a mechanic.
Kaieteur News understands that both brothers are off to a speedy recovery, with Kapildeo already released from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Gopinauth, who is already eating and sitting up, to be released from the hospital within a day or two.
At a press conference on Sunday, Dr. Jindal, who is employed by the Walter Reid Memorial Hospital, Washington DC, stated that this was his seventh visit to Guyana to perform such a surgery, the first being organised by President of the Zara Realty Holding Corporation, George Subraj.
The three surgeries that followed were arranged through the Ministry of Health.
Subraj explained that the Ministry of Health has been very co-operative with the surgery, especially when it involved the supply of medication, and the Balwant Singh Hospital has been very receptive and helpful in facilitating the initiative.
He stated that the medication is free since it is supplied by the Government of Guyana, the patients would not pay the doctors, and even the Balwant Singh Hospital reduced its fees to facilitate more patients.
Gopinauth should be able to return to his job between six to eight weeks.
This newspaper understands that it is so much cheaper to have this type of surgery conducted in Guyana rather than to have patients flown to India. Many times the doctors in India will not know the status of the patients after the surgery has been completed and they have returned to their homelands.
Dr. Jindal emphasised that patients need post-operation monitoring and it is essential that they receive adequate post-operative care since the medication supplied to them is for their lifetime, a lifelong support medication.
Currently there are more patients being screened and with this surgery being successful, more emphasis will be placed on training the local doctors to “take over” after Dr. Jindal and his team would have completed surgeries.
