The Coordinator of Guyana’s Mangrove Restoration Project, which is set to roll-out a $1 billion plan, has resigned over differences with chairman of the Mangrove Action Committee, Annette Arjoon, Kaieteur News understands.
Dr Simpson Da Silva, who was only recently appointed, confirmed that he had given notice of his resignation but he did not want to go into details as to why. Arjoon was not immediately available for comment.
The Mangrove Restoration Project falls under the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI).
Yesterday, the Director of NARI, Dr Oudho Homenauth, advised Da Silva that his resignation was accepted and as such his resignation would be effective on March 22.
However, Dr Homenauth advised Da Silva that he had 20 days leave and he should proceed on the leave as of today.
Da Silva has worked as a scientific and educational leader and advisor for over 35 years in the fields of Agricultural Health, Veterinary Preventative Medicine, Food and Nutrition Security, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Carbon Sequestration, Environmental Health and Sustainable Rural Development in North, South, Central Americas and the Caribbean.
Da Silva’s resignation comes just after the European Union (EU) announced the first set of funding for the mangrove restoration project.
“This project is considered essential for our survival and is also considered one of the least cost options that we have in terms of preparing our coast for the effects of climate change, specifically the rise in sea level,” the Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud has said.
The government has launched the $1billion Sustainable Coastal Zone Protection Programme through Mangrove Management.
The project will develop a National Mangrove Management Action Plan and establish a Mangrove Code of Practice for future management of this valuable natural resource.
The main activities of the project will be: public awareness and education; Research into the ecology of mangroves and mudbanks; protection and rehabilitation of mangroves; monitoring and enforcement of forest legislation .
