While thousands were busy gyrating on the streets of Georgetown behind the Mashramani float parade, Michael Toussaint allegedly took the opportunity to snatch one of the gyrator’s gold chain valued $9,000.
But unfortunately for him he was caught by public spirited persons minutes after he committed the unlawful act.
The court was told by police prosecutor, Lionel Harvey, that on Republic Day, Wendy Eastman, was walking on a street in Queenstown Georgetown, when the accused came up from behind her and snatched the gold chain she was wearing around her neck.
Before the accused could have made his way from the scene, he was arrested by person who had witness what had transpired.
He was then handed over to the police.
To the charge he pleaded not guilty.
Attorney at-law George Thomas made an appearance for the accused. Thomas told the court that his client is gainfully employed by the Mayor and City Council.
Thomas went on to explain that his client who has no antecedent, resides at West La Penitence Georgetown with his family.
The lawyer said that he does not see the reason why the accused should not be granted bail.
After no objection was made by the prosecution, bail was set in the sum of $100,000. The matter will be called again on February 28.
