President Bharrat Jagdeo leaves Guyana today for India, which is considering giving Guyana a soft loan to set up a specialty hospital here.
Jagdeo said that the discussions in India would focus on having Indians staff the hospital.
For this year, the government has budgeted $150 million to commence preparatory work to design the 150-bed surgical specialty hospital which will conduct specialist surgical procedures, including invasive cardiology and radiation oncology.
Addressing residents of Dazzell Housing Scheme yesterday, Jagdeo said that the aim is to ensure that Guyanese who need complicated surgery are able to do so and at a significantly lower cost.
Apart from Guyanese, he said the hospital would cater for citizens of the Caribbean, northern Brazil, and even North America, where the cost of doing surgery is exorbitant.
He said that even now, North Americans travel to India to do a surgery for an estimated US$5, 000 that they would have otherwise paid up to US30,000 for the same quality.
He said that while over the next three years the health system would be boosted with 900 new general medical practitioners, the country is in need of a specialist hospital.
