New lessons, different adaptations and practical applications were just a part of the issues addressed as International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) referee, Trinidadian James Beckles employed as he took local referees through their paces on the second day of activities at the National Gymnasium Mandela Avenue, yesterday afternoon.
Intent on modernizing the techniques of local officials, Mr Beckles introduced them to several techniques applicable to their duties in the fistic sport. The officials were given a first hand demonstration of the techniques applied while on duty in the ring. This included the proper way of circling the boxers while they are in combat. The referees/judges were also given an opportunity to employ judging techniques during actual bouts between boxers drawn from several of the local gyms.
However, the officials were forced to work devoid of the modern scoring equipment suggested by the ruling body. Mr. Beckles explained that the machine was unavoidable delayed and he was forced to seek the intervention of President of the Barbadian Boxing Association (BBA) Joyce Bowen for one of theirs. He said that this piece of equipment should reach Guyana sometime today thus giving the local officials an opportunity to become acquainted with the intricate scoring system.
The referees were also introduced to other topics including ring generalship, recognizing scoring blows and legal punches.
Meanwhile, popular cricket commentator and sports enthusiast, Joseph ‘Reds’ Pereira paid the officials a courtesy call and beseeched them to soak in as much knowledge as possible. He commended Mr. Beckles for his work and reminded the local officials of the Trinidadian’s expertise and skill. “We have worked together and I am assured that Mr. Beckles is capable of performing his tasks,” said Mr. Pereira.
Sessions continue today and culminate on Sunday. The referees would also get an opportunity to practice their skill at a specially organised tournament scheduled for Goed Fortuin WCD tomorrow morning.
