Region’s Best at ASATT Swim Invitational
Niall Roberts to headline a Guyana combined 5-member team
Leading Guyanese swimmer Niall Roberts will headline Guyana’s 5-member team to the Annual 4-day ASATT Invitational Inter Club Swim Meet which is set to commence in the Twin Island Republic on Thursday and end on Sunday.
Close to 350 athletes will converge at the Marlins Swim Facility in Westmoorings, for the premier meet on the T&T swim calendar.
Apart from Guyana and the host country, teams from Jamaica, Antigua & Barbuds, Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia and Suriname have registered to compete against the best of Trinidad and Tobago age group swimming.
Some of the host nation’s foreign based swimmers have also returned to compete at this meet, which is a qualifier for the many championships next year including CCCAN, CARIFTA, the World Youth Championships, the Pan Amercican Games, and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Dorado Speed Swim Club members Athena Gaskin, Hannibal Gaskin, Soroya Simmons and Jamie Jabar (Dolphin Swim Club) are the other swimmers from Guyana for the event. Roberts, also a member Dorado and Jabar left for T&T yesterday while the others will leave today.
T&T’s Youth Olympic Gold medalist Christian Homer would compete on local soil for the first time since his historic achievement. It will also be the first time he will compete for his new home team, Marlins Swim Club.
Another Marlins swimmer, Samantha Rahael, who was a finalist at the CAC Games, has also returned from her Bolles High School training base in Florida for this meet. CCCAN Gold Medallist Napoleon Howell of Sea Hawks will also return from his Minnesota school of St. Cloud State University to participate.
While the meet will be without the World Championships trio of George Bovell III, Joshua Mc Leod and Cherelle Thompson as this meet runs during the same period in Dubai, the meet will feature some of best age group swimmers in the region.
Many of the region’s top athletes will also be aiming to make their mark at this Meet. Siona Huxley of St. Lucia, who actually qualified for the Youth Olympics at last year’s Invitational, will return to swim for her Sharks Swim Club. Christian Selby of Pirates Swim Club, who won 5 gold and 2 silver at Carifta, will be Baptiste’s biggest challenge in the 11-12 age group. The meet starts at 18:00hrs on Thursday and Friday evening, and 17:00hrs on Saturday and Sunday evening.
