Thousands gathered yesterday at the Courts (Guyana) Main Street Branch to witness their annual Courts Christmas concert and tree lighting ceremony for which this year’s theme is “all I want for Christmas is … courts”.
The company simultaneously held another one of its weekly drawings for the ongoing “Courts Vault Promotion”.
Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad; Minister of Social Security and Services, Priya Manickchand; Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony; and other officials were there.
The programme formally commenced with the singing of the National Anthem after which a series of entrainment indulged the crowd that filled almost the entire main street area.
The crowd was entertained with acts such as Michelle ‘Big Red’ King, Junior Classic Dance Company, Courts choir, and DJ Akello. Then there was the Courts Vault Team that appeared in “fine styles”.
The winner of this week’s Courts Vault Promotion, Nicola Joseph, arrived in an extremely glamorous BMW while the “vault ladies” and DJ Casual arrived with a limousine.
Joseph, who entered the competition through her cash purchase of a washing machine, won $2 million in “cold hard cash”.
Her win ushered in what some considered being the most “magical” part of the evening’s proceedings.
Minister of Tourism Manniram Prashad, reminded the gathering that “we must never forget Christianity”. Christmas is a time for sharing, he added.
Prashad complimented Courts for being good corporate citizens in giving back to the community “which is what Christmas is all about— sharing”.
He added that in 1994 the company set a standard for hire purchase. Along the years it continues to give Guyanese access to these items that they might not have been able to afford through a cash purchase.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was given the honour of illuminating the tree lighting ceremony.
With six trees completely lighted, three more than last year, Main Street was immediately transferred into a magical atmosphere.
Santa and his team made a grand appearance on a well lighted and beautifully decorated truck sharing sweets and other goodies to children.
Santa and his team brought along a huge amount of confetti which contributed to making the event even more magical and ushered in the Christmas feeling with a bang.
